What is a Photofabulous treatment by Lumenis, at Mirabel clinic?
Photofabulous is a non-surgical laser rejuvenation therapy which helps to resurface the skin, stimulate collagen and effectively treat skin discolouration. It’s an easily tolerated procedure which helps to improve a wide range of skin concerns which include:
- Sun damage pigmentation
- Minor scars from acne or chickenpox
- Vascular lesions
- Rosacea
- Hyperpigmentation
- Facial ageing (lines, wrinkles, skin sagging and dehydration)
- Enlarged pores

Is the Photofabulous treatment safe?
Laser technology has improved vastly over the last decade, and we are always looking for the very best devices to provide safe and effective treatments for our patients.
At Mirabel Clinic we use the highly acclaimed Lumenis M22 with ResurFX™ technologies, an extremely safe device with a proven track record in safety and efficacy. Unlike a typical laser treatment which only uses one wavelength of light, the M22 IPL utilises a broad spectrum of light, which can safely target a wider range of skin imperfections without the risk of burning.
By using both technologies sequentially in the same treatment session, both skin pigmentation and skin texture can be treated simultaneously and effectively. The M22 IPL removes both unwanted pigmentation as well as vascular lesions, whilst the ResurFX™ fractional laser stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin fibres, deep within the skin.
As a Photofabulous treatment is non-ablative, it means that the skin is not broken and will not bleed. This ensures a more comfortable treatment and less downtime than some other similar treatments available.
Am I suitable for a Photofabulous treatment at Mirabel Clinic?
As with any non-surgical treatment, it is important to attend a pre-treatment consultation as not every skin type can benefit from Photofabulous or Photofabulous Plus. Some darker skins may not be suitable, as the IPL light will target melanin within the skin and there can be a potential risk of laser burn with darker skins.
We will examine your skin at your no obligation consultation, as well as check your medical history to ensure that there are no contraindications which may prevent or restrict your photofacial from going ahead.
What happens during a Photofabulous treatment, at Mirabel Clinic?
Your practitioner will first assess your skin and cleanse it, so there are no products on the skin. Numbing cream is not usually applied as it can impair the results but can be offered if required.
They will then ask you to wear protective eyewear. A cooling gel will be applied to the area/s of concern. The handheld Lumenis M22 device will be passed over your skin, projecting the light energy deep into the skin, causing microscopic channels within the dermis, which, as they heal, will reveal a fresh layer of skin tissue. The treatment will also encourage collagen production, which is a vital protein that the body produces naturally for firm and healthy skin, and is depleted as we age.
The treatment will take around 45 minutes, depending on your concern and the treatment area size. You might experience some slight discomfort during the treatment, rather like a warm, pinching sensation.
When will I see results? Is there any downtime?
The Lumenis Photofabulous treatment can offer immediate and ongoing results. You can experience skin that looks brighter and slightly tighter in appearance, in the short term. You may have some slight redness immediately after your treatment, but this will subside in a few hours. A cold compress can help speed the fading of any redness.
There is no clinical downtime with Photofabulous and you can return to your daily activities after the treatment. There’s no time required to heal with this unique laser therapy, unlike other treatments, as the skin isn’t broken. There may be some redness and slight swelling in the days that follow but this will be minor, and will dissipate as you heal. Patients with any concerns are provided with a contact for follow-up questions after treatment; you’re in safe hands with the Mirabel team.
The benefits of collagen stimulation will become apparent from 3 months post-treatment, although patients report feeling better in themselves almost immediately. In the long term, you can enjoy firmer, smoother and more evenly-toned skin with only review treatments needed maybe once a year.
How many Lumenis Photofabulous treatments will I need?
A course of 3 treatments is needed, with a patch test at your initial consultation at Mirabel Clinic. Treatments are spread 4 weeks apart, for a total of 12 weeks.
Photofabulous Plus requires just one extra week in your schedule, as HydraFacial appointments take place one week before each Photofabulous treatment, for a total of 13 weeks.
When should I have a Photofabulous treatment?
At Mirabel Clinic, we recommend Photofabulous treatments to be undertaken during the winter months as direct sun exposure will need to be avoided for 2 weeks before and after the treatment. SPF50 will need to be used at all times, even when it is not sunny outside.
