Chemical peels are solutions, which improve and smooth the texture of the skin by removing its damaged outer layers. They enhance your appearance and your self-confidence and may also be used to remove pre-cancerous skin growths, and improve acne and acne scarring. They can also be used to reduce pigmentation changes. The peels we use at Mirabel are gentle peels with minimal post treatment down time. For that reason a course of three peels, over the course of 8 weeks, is generally advised.
There are a huge variety of chemical peels on the market. At Mirabel we use the alpha-hydroxy acids – trichloroacetic acid (TCA), ascorbic acid and lactic acid and the beta-hydroxy acid – salicylic acid. These are all self-neutralising which means there is a reduced risk of adverse effects. Peel treatments are very gentle, they remove the top layer of the skin to reveal a smoother, more radiant skin surface and reduce irregular pigmentation.
The procedure involves an initial cleansing of the skin followed by the application of the chemical peel for a few minutes. The whole treatment takes about 10 minutes. No anaesthetic is required but some mild stinging may be experienced. After the treatment the skin may be red and irritable with some possible flaking for a few days. A high factor sun block is advised for at least two weeks after a chemical peel. The results of a chemical peel will be subtle at first but after three treatments there will be a significant improvement in the quality and texture of the skin. Depending on the type of chemical peel used you may notice fewer fine wrinkles, reduced pigmentation and reduced acne spots and scarring.
