How to maintain youthful skin in your 50s and beyond – Mirabel Clinic – Swindon

From around the age of 50, we might start to notice the more significant changes that our skin experiences.

Hormonal changes in the body, such as peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause all offer their challenges to our complexions and it’s between the ages of around 50 and 65 that here at Mirabel Clinic in Swindon, our patients start to communicate to us how different their skin is not only looking but how it makes them feel.

Changes in tone, texture, laxity and the appearance of deeper lines, wrinkles, folds and hollows might begin to be more noticeable and this can have a real impact on self-confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately this might not have to be the time for drastic measures, such as invasive surgery, but to ‘up-the-game’ somewhat, when it comes to non-surgical, in-clinic treatments, such as injectables, peels and device-led skin procedures.

“When I hit 50, everything went south, including my skin!”

We all notice differences in our skin as we age. Let’s face it, even in our late 20s and 30s, some changes in the skin’s appearance, tone, texture and tightness will inevitably be seen.

If you are someone who has been very careful in the sun, do not smoke and you eat a healthy diet, you might have been able to ‘swerve’ the ageing process a little more successfully than someone who likes to sunbathe and has a less healthy lifestyle, up until now. However, ageing will come to us all and it’s around the age of 50 that most people will start to comment on how their skin feels dryer and less ‘bouncy’. It’s more difficult to keep it well moisturised, even when drinking plenty of water and staying out of those UV rays.

This is due to the hormonal changes that take place within our bodies and the increased reduction of substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, within the skin tissues. Bone, muscle and fat loss in the face will also contribute to a change in face shape (many patients notice jowls and sagging cheeks, leading to a more square appearance to the face). Hollows in the temples and cheeks, as well as sagging skin around the eyes will all become more apparent, as the ageing process accelerates, at this age and beyond.

So, what can I do to help my skin at age 50?

Fortunately, the ageing process can be slowed down, and this doesn’t have to mean having a surgical face lift, with all the potential discomfort, scars and downtime that this brings. At Mirabel we offer a myriad of cosmetic treatments which can be used alone or combined, for outstanding results and ongoing skin management and to delay those advanced signs of ageing.

Botox® or toxin treatment (wrinkle-smoothing injections) – no doubt one of the most popular and sought after injectable treatments in the world, toxin injection treatment helps to smooth unwanted expression lines. We treat a range of ages with toxin anti-wrinkle treatment and often, patients start having this when they see those initial lines appearing, such as crow’s feet, Glabellar lines and forehead lines. However, even if you have waited until your 50s to start having toxin treatment it’s certainly not too late! This treatment is quick, very tolerable and can smooth expression lines for months at a time. We use several different toxins at Mirabel including Botox® so that we can match the right one to you.

Dermal fillers – not to be confused with Botox® or toxin treatment, dermal fillers do what they describe (the clue is in the name). They consist of gel-like substances and hyaluronic acid which act to replace lost hyaluronic acid within the skin and to also sit within the skin tissues, to support them.

Unlike toxins which temporarily relax facial muscles that cause expression lines, dermal fillers ‘fill’ deeper, static lines, plump the skin, support and lift skin tissues and can even re-sculpt facial features (such as the nose and chin). Dermal fillers are hugely versatile and can even perform a ‘liquid facelift’ (extremely popular for our over-50 patients), creating an internal ‘scaffold’ for the skin tissues and hydrating the skin cells, for a more glowing, hydrated and smooth skin texture.

Skin boosters – BELOTERO® Revive – a next-generation, injectable hyaluronic acid skin booster, which is designed to rejuvenate the quality of skin, as well as revitalise the early and more advanced signs of sun damage.

BELOTERO® Revive contains hyaluronic acid and glycerol. Together, these moisture-attracting ingredients revitalise ageing and sun-damaged skin by improving hydration, elasticity and firmness. Superficial lines are smoothed and skin texture is improved for a more radiant complexion. This treatment will require several sessions for ultimate results.

Skin peels – Do you feel as if your skin looks dull and dry? Are you noticing brown spots or darker patches where the sun has left its calling card? Do you struggle with acne scars or pot marks? Skin peels use specific acids, targeting a range of skin concerns. They are applied in various strengths, depending on your needs and tend to yield the best results in a course of several treatments.

Skin peels give very superficial to deeper treatment and a wide range of skin concerns can be addressed. We offer the Enerpeel and range of peels here at Mirabel, for clinically-proven results. A course of three treatments is required for the best results.

Plasma IQ – Plasma has long been used in surgery to ‘cauterize’ wounds and in the world of aesthetic medicine, is a recent but highly effective innovation.

The Plasma IQ handheld device works through the generation of a targeted micro-beam of plasma energy. This causes epidermal sublimation as well as assisting in the production of new collagen, from the healing response. The surrounding tissues are un-affected and the result is tighter and more toned skin, both immediately and in the weeks that follow this treatment. Plasma is highly popular as an alternative to blepharoplasty (upper and lower eyelids) and offers far quicker healing times than surgery. It can also address lines, wrinkles, sun-damage, lesions such as skin tags and dehydrated, sagging skin.

SkinPen® – often referred to as collagen induction therapy, SkinPen® medical microneedling treatment utilises a hand-held device which uses 14 state of the art, smooth, adjustable length needles which pierce the skin and cause thousands of micro-injuries to its surface. The body is then tricked in to producing collagen, to heal this damage, resulting in a significant improvement in the tone and texture of your skin. Pigmented areas of the skin are also repaired, due to the growth of new skin, providing a more even colour, tone and texture.

Fibrous and uneven scar tissue can also be broken up, enabling the new skin to be smoother. A course of 3 or more treatments may be required for optimal results.
