Overview …

A non-invasive, light-based treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target pigmentation and signs of photoageing. At Mirabel, IPL is delivered using the Lumenis M22 system, which applies controlled pulses of light to the skin, creating a gentle heating effect that stimulates cellular renewal while reducing visible discolouration. The treatment can also be adapted with specialised filters to address concerns such as acne, where light energy targets bacteria, inflammation and excess oil production. Suitable for a range of skin concerns, IPL supports clearer, more even-toned skin with progressive improvement over a course of treatments.

For IPL treatments, controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light are delivered into the skin. This light is absorbed by specific targets within the skin, including melanin in areas of pigmentation. The resulting heat response helps to break down visible discolouration, which is then gradually cleared through the skin’s natural renewal processes.

The M22 system allows for the use of different filters and settings, enabling treatments to be adapted for concerns such as pigmentation, sun damage, uneven tone and acne. In acne treatment, a dedicated filter may be used to help target breakout activity, calm inflammation and support clearer skin.

IPL can also be combined with other technologies within the M22 platform, such as ResurFX fractional resurfacing, to address both skin tone and texture as part of a more comprehensive treatment approach.

IPL is used to treat a range of concerns related to skin tone and clarity.

It may be recommended for:
• Pigmentation, including sun damage and age spots
• Uneven skin tone or mottled discolouration
• Mild to moderate acne
• Early signs of photoageing.

IPL is delivered as a series of light pulses applied to the skin using a handheld device. Each pulse is brief and targeted, with the treatment adjusted according to the area and concern being addressed.

During treatment, you may experience a mild stinging or warming sensation as the light energy is delivered. Topical anaesthetic may be required, this will be discussed with your clinician.

Following treatment, the skin may appear slightly red or warm, with some swelling in certain areas. In some cases, pigmentation may temporarily darken before gradually clearing.

A course of treatments is typically recommended, usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

The effectiveness of IPL depends on the type and severity of the concern being treated, as well as individual skin characteristics.

Factors that may influence results include:
• The depth and type of pigmentation
• The presence of active acne or inflammation
• Skin type and response to light-based treatments
• Consistency and spacing of treatments within a course
• Sun exposure before and after treatment

While many patients notice visible improvement in skin tone and clarity, IPL is typically delivered as a course of treatments to achieve and maintain optimal results.

A test patch is required prior to treatment to assess skin response and ensure suitability.
