What to expect from a Cosmelan journey

Cosmelan is often described as a peel, but this only tells part of the story. In reality, it is a structured treatment journey designed to gradually reset how the skin produces pigment. Understanding this process helps set realistic expectations and ensures patients are prepared for each stage.

Stage 1: Preparation Appointment

The Cosmelan journey begins with a preparation appointment. At this stage, the client is given their prescribed homecare products and clear guidance on how to use them for the following four weeks. This preparation phase helps condition the skin, support the barrier and ensure the skin is ready for the in-clinic mask application that follows.

Stage 2: Initiation

The treatment begins with an in-clinic application of a professional-strength mask. This contains a combination of active ingredients including azelaic acid, kojic acid and phytic acid, chosen for their ability to target pigmentation pathways.

The mask remains on the skin for several hours before being removed at home. During the first few days, the skin may feel tight, sensitive or warm, followed by visible peeling.

This stage is often the most noticeable, but it is only the beginning.

Stage 3: Correction and control

After the initial peel, a prescribed homecare programme continues the depigmentation process. This phase is essential.

The skin is still actively regulating melanin production, and consistent use of the recommended products helps to:

• reduce residual pigmentation
• prevent rebound pigmentation
• support skin barrier recovery

Without this stage, results are unlikely to be stable or long-lasting.

Stage 4: Maintenance and prevention

Pigmentation is influenced by ongoing triggers, particularly UV exposure. Even on cloudy days, a significant proportion of UV radiation reaches the skin, meaning protection is non-negotiable.

Long-term success depends on maintaining results through:

• daily broad-spectrum SPF
• appropriate skincare
• periodic clinical review where needed

What results feel like, not just look like

Patients often expect only a visual improvement, but many also notice a change in how their skin behaves.

Tone appears more even, but texture can feel smoother and more refined due to increased cell turnover and improved skin renewal.

In clinical settings, high satisfaction rates are commonly reported, particularly for stubborn pigmentation conditions that have not responded to other treatments.

The importance of guidance

Cosmelan is powerful, but it is also nuanced.

The timing of application, duration of the mask, and progression through homecare all need to be tailored to the individual. This is where clinician-led care becomes essential, ensuring the treatment is both effective and appropriate for the skin.

At Mirabel, this aligns closely with a client-centred approach — not simply delivering a treatment, but guiding a process.
