Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a targeted treatment used to reduce the appearance of thread veins and small varicose veins. By injecting a specialised solution into the affected vessels, it causes them to close and gradually fade from view. The result is clearer, more even-looking skin, particularly on the legs, achieved through a precise and clinically led approach.

Overview …

Sclerotherapy is a well-established treatment used to reduce the appearance of thread veins and small varicose veins, most commonly on the legs. It works by injecting a carefully selected solution directly into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body.

These visible veins can develop for a variety of reasons, including genetics, hormonal changes, lifestyle factors and circulation changes over time. While they are often harmless, they can affect the appearance of the skin and lead to self-consciousness, particularly in areas such as the lower legs.

By targeting the veins directly, sclerotherapy helps to improve skin clarity and create a more even appearance. Over time, the treated veins fade, leaving the skin looking clearer and more uniform in tone.

At Mirabel Clinic, sclerotherapy is used to treat superficial thread veins on the legs through a precise, clinically controlled approach.

The treatment involves injecting a specialised solution directly into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body. Over time, the appearance of these veins reduces as circulation is naturally redirected to healthier vessels.

Treatment is tailored to the extent and distribution of the veins, and more than one session may be required to achieve the desired outcome.

Sclerotherapy is used specifically for thread veins (spider veins) on the legs.

This includes:
• Small red, blue or purple thread veins
• Clusters of superficial veins on the thighs or lower legs
• Areas where veins are visible through the skin but not raised

It is not used for larger varicose veins, which require a different clinical approach.

The treatment involves a series of very fine injections into the affected veins. Most patients experience a mild stinging or tingling sensation during injection, but discomfort is generally minimal.

Following treatment, the area may feel slightly tender, and mild bruising or localised swelling can occur.

Results develop gradually as the treated veins are broken down and absorbed by the body.

Some veins may fade within a few weeks, while others take longer to resolve. More than one treatment is sometimes recommended, as not all veins respond in the same way or at the same rate.

The aim is a visible reduction in the appearance of thread veins, with clearer, more even-looking skin on the legs.

Sclerotherapy requires careful assessment to ensure suitability and safe treatment planning.

At Mirabel Clinic, factors such as vein type, skin condition and overall vascular health are considered before proceeding. In some cases, further investigation or alternative treatments may be recommended.

After treatment, specific aftercare is important. This will include wearing compression hosiery, maintaining gentle movement and avoiding excessive heat or sun exposure for a short period.
