Overview …

Diathermy is a well-established medical technique that uses a fine probe to deliver controlled electrical heat directly to the skin. This heat cauterises or breaks down targeted tissue, allowing for the safe and effective treatment of superficial skin concerns.
At Mirabel Clinic, diathermy is used with clinical precision to treat a variety of benign lesions. The focus is always on accuracy, skin preservation and achieving a clean, natural result with minimal downtime.

Treatment is carried out with a focus on precision, restraint and skin integrity:

  • Careful clinical assessment
  • Conservative, targeted treatment
  • Attention to healing and skin quality
  • Outcomes that sit naturally within the skin

Diathermy is commonly used to treat a range of benign skin lesions, including:

  • Skin tags
  • Thread veins
  • Blood spots (cherry angiomas)
  • Milia
  • Seborrhoeic keratoses
  • Small warts and verrucae

Each lesion is assessed carefully to confirm suitability before treatment.

Diathermy is a quick, precise treatment, typically experienced as a brief warmth or mild stinging at the point of contact. The sensation is short-lived and generally well tolerated.

Immediately after treatment, the area may appear slightly red, raised or darker in colour. A small crust or scab often forms as part of the natural healing process and should be left undisturbed.

Healing usually takes several days to two weeks, depending on the area treated. As the skin recovers, the lesion reduces or resolves, revealing a clearer surface.

Many lesions respond well to a single treatment, although further sessions may occasionally be recommended depending on the size, type and response of the lesion.

Diathermy is a safe and well-established treatment when performed appropriately, though some temporary effects can occur. These may include mild redness, slight swelling, small scab formation and, in some cases, temporary changes in pigmentation. Minor scarring can occur.

Following treatment, careful aftercare supports optimal healing. The area should be kept clean and dry, with the skin left undisturbed as it recovers. Any small scabs should not be picked, as this can affect healing and increase the risk of scarring.

Protecting the area from sun exposure is important, particularly during the healing phase, and tailored skincare advice will be provided where appropriate.

All considerations and guidance will be discussed during consultation to ensure treatment is both safe and effective for your skin.
