Retin-A GelThis is a topical gel which contains the active ingredient Tretinoin, a form of Vitamin A. It is a prescription only medication which, if applied regularly, can improve the quality of the skin by increasing the rate of turn over of the cells in the top layer of the skin. Retin-A should be applied sparingly to clean dry skin until it has been completely absorbed. Initially you should try to use it 5 times per week and thereafter about 2-3 times per week. The beneficial effects of Retin-A appear after about 6 weeks of regular use. Retina-A should not be used in pregnancy as it can cause birth defects. The way it works is largely unknown but it has been shown to improve blood supply to the skin which in turn increases the turnover of the dead cells in the outer layer of the skin which results in new, more youthful skin. The main side effect of Retin-A is skin dryness. If the skin becomes red and inflamed after a few days of application you should stop and wait for the reaction to settle down before recommencing the Retin-A. Retin-A was first introduced for the treatment of acne more than 30 years ago but over the last 15 years it has been recognised that it also has a considerable anti-ageing effect. Retin-A is the trademark for a compound which contains the vitamin A derivative, tretinoin and this is the active ingredient with the anti-ageing effect. It can significantly improve fine lines, reduces pigmentation and improves the skin’s overall condition and appearance.
